I have The Serenity Prayer right above my desk, and read it a lot these days! It’s an affirmation that really helps. It’s just one of the great contemporary ways to frame artwork, so they are ready to hang, right out of the box! Here’s what it looks like (above). The Serenity Prayer, above, was written in the early 1930s by American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr and popularized in the 1940s by the mutual-aid group Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). I’ve also done two versions, one with “God” and one without. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. The shorter the text, the more opportunity a calligrapher has to use lettering, spacing, fonts, colors and placement to bring out not just the beauty, but the meaning. But when I wrote it out to decide on how best to do the layout, I also found “Accept, Change and Know” as another theme.ĭesigning a calligraphy poem can be a complex puzzle. ![]() Most people focus on “Serenity, Courage and Wisdom”. because it feels like the continuation of God’s message for me from the first line of the Litany of Trus t that I shared previously. I love the 3rd line that says and the wisdom to know You already love me just the way I am. Other versions in common use are from the New English Version (adopted by the Church of England in 1977), and the Catholic version of the 'Our Father' (in latin here ). The traditional Lords Prayer is based on the Authorised Version of the scriptures in 1611. The way I’ve written it in calligraphy brings out it’s sub-meanings as well. As the name of the prayer suggests, it’s coined from the original short version of the serenity prayer. There are numerous different versions of the prayer.
